Utrecht is the fourth largest city of The Netherlands and has many old buildings and structures from the Middle Ages. Since the 8th century Utrecht has been the religious centre of The Netherlands. The central location within the country makes it an important place for rail and road transport.

The earliest settlements of Utrecht probably are from around 50 AD. These were fortresses from the Romans, but soon after craftsmen and traders start to settle too. German tribes invaded the Roman empire regularly and that caused that the city was abandoned around 275. In the 7th century missionaries tried to convert Frisians and settled in Utrecht. This was the beginning of the Bishopric of Utrecht and Utrecht being the religious centre of the Netherlands. In the Middle Ages Utrecht was one of the most important cities of the Netherlands. In World War II Utrecht was captured by the Germans, but the city did not get bombed. By that Utrecht still has his historical centre.

Nowadays Utrecht is a popular city, certainly among students. The Utrecht university is the largest university of the Netherlands and Utrecht also hosts the second highest number of cultural events in the Netherlands. Click here for a list with the top 10 things to do in Utrecht or scroll down for a long list with Utrecht attractions and sights.
