The Hague

The Hague is the capital city of the province South Holland, despite that The Hague is not the largest city in the province, which is Rotterdam. The Hague is the seat of the Dutch government. King Willem Alexander will soon live and work in The Hague.

In 1230 The Hague started as hunting residence along a pond, which now is the Hofvijver. Later this became a palace and counts of Holland used The Hague as administrative centre and residence when being in Holland. The Hague did not have city walls, which made it easy for Spanish troops to occupy the town. Considered was to demolish The Hague, but that proposal was abandoned. In 1588 The Hague became the location of the government of the Dutch Republic.

The Hague is not a city with canals and city walls. The Hague has some small streets from the Middle Ages, but also many spacious streets with luxurious residences for diplomats. In World War II The Hague sustained heavy damage, but was also quickly rebuilt and expanded to the southwest. Despite that The Hague officially never got the city status, they are allowed to call themselves city. Famous sights in The Hague are the Peace Palace, Binnenhof and Ridderzaal (Knights’ hall). Click here for a list with the top 10 things to do in The Hague or scroll down for a long list with The Hague attractions and sights.
