Rotterdam history

Rotterdam started with a dam in the river Rotte in 1270. This grew into a major city with one of the largest ports of the world. This was possible because of the strategic location at the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta on the North Sea. In World War II Rotterdam was bombed and the city centre almost was completely destroyed. The day after the Netherlands capitulated. After the war it was gradually rebuilt. Today Rotterdam has a population of more than 600.000 people and the city offers a lot. Despite the bombings in World War II there still are historical buildings and also modern architecture. The modern architecture gave Rotterdam the name of architecture city of the Netherlands.
