Amsterdam history

Amsterdam started as a dam in the river Amstel that became a fishing village in the 12th century. In the Middle Ages it became one of the most important ports in the world and by that the city expanded. The world famous canals are from the 17th century and in 2010 added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Prosperity of the city declined during the war with England and France, but at the end of the 19th century new museums and stations were built. The city expanded again until the First World War. During the Second World War the city did not suffer from bombings like Rotterdam did. Nowadays Amsterdam has a population of over 800.000. New suburbs contain many public parks and open spaces and the new Amsterdam business district is the Zuidas.
