Holland or Netherlands

Holland or Netherlands? Many tourists always are confused about those names and wonder: is Holland the same as the Netherlands? The official name of the country is the Netherlands and they have twelve provinces. Two of those provinces are North-Holland and South-Holland. They lay in the west of the country the Netherlands and together they were called Holland. They were the economic power in the Middle Ages. Today North-Holland and South-Holland still are important and three of the largest cities of the country are situated there: Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. Although it officially is the Netherlands, this website has the name Journey2Holland because Holland is the common name used by tourists. Because of that most times the name Holland is used in the text.
